July/August 2010 Sailing Trip — Day 1

Tired! That’s the primary thing we’re feeling now. We had hoped to get off by 07:00 this morning, but last minute question-answering for the live-in petsitter we use when we’re both travelliing kept us busy until 08:00. We drove just a little over 930 miles today, taking approximately 15 hours (give or take 5 minutes). We went through southeastern Utah, crossing into southwestern Colorado on the “infamous” US highway 666, then south into New Mexico and down to Albuquerque. From there, we headed almost directly east eventually crossing into the Texas panhandle, arriving in Amarillo just around midnight. (For those of you keeping track, that’s not actually 16 hours, because entering Texas also entered the Central time zone.)

Tomorrow shouldn’t be nearly as long a day, because it’s “only” about 700 to 725 miles to Lake Charles, where we’ll spend three days visiting my 95 year-old mother.
