Bill, many thanks for your kind remarks. I appreciate the suggestions for more out-of-the-way places to visit, too. Because this was our first such trip and our time was rather limited, we were necessarily limited to visiting just a couple of better known spots. But we are the kind of people who strongly prefer not to hang around with tourists, but with locals, so your recommendations are much appreciated.

If you decided to acquire a P40, by all means join the Passport Owners Association and let me know the details of your boat (I'm the keeper of the P40 database).

Thanks again!

An interesting trip and well written. If you have time, you may want to check out the really out islands where only cruisers and the weekly mail boats go - places like Crooked, Acklins, Rum Cay, Mayguana and so on. They are some of the few places in the Caribbean where life and welcomes are like they were 30 years ago. I was very interested to read about how your boat performed and your satisfaction with her. I am considering a Passport 40 and reading real world experiences like yours is a big help.

Thanks for the comments, my friends!

The trip was, in some ways, a life-changer for me. We accomplished so many "firsts": first time to sail in the Keys, first time to cross the Gulf Stream, first time to clear into another country, first time to clear back into the USA, first time to visit the Bahamas, first time to sail 48 hours nonstop, first time to sail in water over two miles (3km) deep, first time to do the kind of complex navigation required on the Little Bahama Bank, and on and on...

Dallis, there's a pretty steep learning curve when learning to sail, but it's not terribly high (for day-sailing, that is). But the curve gets steeper and much higher when one wants to go cruising, especially passage-making. Admittedly, we made only a small passage (around 80 miles to cross from Miami to West End, then about 250 miles from Marsh Harbor back to Palm Beach), so it was nothing like crossing an ocean. But that's why we (and others) are taking things in small steps.

This trip gave me a huge amount of new-found confidence, both in the boat and in my own capabilities. Of course, this confidence isn't license to head off to round Cape Horn or anything like that, but it is license to start planning a longer, more challenging trip, like sailing down to the Virgin Islands. There are a whole bunch of things we haven't done at all yet, including dealing with very heavy weather when well offshore. A half-hour gale in the Hawk Channel in the Florida Keys is a far cry from a 24-hour storm with gale-force winds and 20' seas out in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean!

What a fabulous adventure for you and Barbara! Your log makes it clear there is a lot more to sailing than a non-sailor would ever suspect. It's like the two of you have acquired a whole new profession.
Well done and well told!

Jim,

You have my admiration. I always said I didn't want a boat. Instead, I wanted a friend who had a boat. Now I now why. You guys are working way too hard. I hope you are enjoying it and finding it worth the effort.

I'm so glad I wasn't there with you, it surely would have been the harbinger of things to come with my luck on boats. What a beautiful vessel! Congratulations on your successful return and I'm thrilled you weren't swallowed up by a large methane pocket surfacing causing yet another mysterious disapearance in those beautiful waters. You two are the neatest people I know! I can live vicariously through you when I hear about your fabulous trips!
